The European Roulette

Introduction

There are different forms of Roulette like American, French and European, however the most popular form of roulette is the European Wheel that has single Zero in it. The European Roulette is by far the most popular form of roulette because it is more favorable to players when it comes to payout.

European Roulette has 36 numbers (1-36) and one Zero (see illustration 1). So in total we can say there are 37 numbers including Zero. There is a wheel with the numbers on it and a small ball which is spun across the wheel to determine the winning number. You place your bets on the table and if the ball lands on the number you have placed you bet, then you win.

So say your favorite number is 10 and you have placed $1 chip on the table on number 10. The wheel is spinning and the ball is spun across the wheel, and finally the ball lands on number 10 on the wheel. Yahoo! you are a winner. Becasue you had a  bet on number 10 you will get $35 as profit. We will discuss later in this page how payouts or you winnings are calculated.

Illustration 1 - Online European Roulette

The Wheel

The wheel is round in shape and numbers are all across the wheel. It is important to learn the wheel and to know what numbers are where on the wheel. Here I will discuss the wheel at length. Follow the diagram below.

Illustration 2 - The European Roulette Wheel

The first thing that you would notice is that the numbers are not evenly organized but the distribution of numbers looks randomized. However this setup of numbers is the setup for European Roulette. Notice that Zero is at the top and number 10 is at the bottom. Things to further notice are that every alternate section of numbers is either RED or BLACK. Notice that the color of Zero is neither RED nor BLACK.

The Table Layout

This is the table where you place your bets. For example you have $1 to bet on something. If you think that the next number that would come up is number 13 then you would put $1 on number 13. If your number comes up then as per the payout table you will be paid out your winnings. If you lose then you will lose $1. So it is important to familiarize yourself to the layout of the table because the place where you place your chips determines your bet.

Look carefully at the diagram below and you will see that predominantly there are two types of bets that you can place on the table – Inside or Outside Bets. Inside bets contain the numbers 1-36 and you can purely bet on numbers including Zero. Outside bets contain groups of numbers either odd or even, red or black, 1-18 or 19-36, in 1st Dozen (means numbers from 1-12), 2nd Dozen (means numbers from 13-24), 3rd Dozen (means numbers from 25-36) or columns where it says 2-1. Column bets are similar to dozen bets but when you place your bet on any of the columns, that means you are placing bets on the 12 numbers of that column.

Payouts - or how the winnings are paid

Say you have placed $1 on the table in some place. If you win or in other words your place wins then you are paid according to the place where you have placed your bet. We will take each of the places one by one and explain them.

INSIDE BETS

  • A - Straight up (one Number):Place your chips directly on any single number (zero including). There are 37 possible Straight Up bets. You win if the ball lands on your number.

  • B - Split Bet (two numbers):Place your chips on the line between any two numbers. There are 57 possible Split bets. You win if the ball lands on either of those numbers.

  • C - Street Bet (three numbers):Place your chips at the end of any row of numbers on the line that separates the inside and outside betting area.. A street bet covers three numbers (entire row of the table). There are 14 possible Street bets. You win if the ball lands on one of those three numbers.

  • D - Corner Bet (four numbers):Place your chips at the corner where four numbers meet. All four numbers are covered. There are 22 possible Corner bets. You win if the ball lands on one of those four numbers.

  • E - Line Bet (six numbers):Place your chips at the end of two rows at the intersection between them. A line bet covers all the numbers in either row, for a total of six. There are 11 possible Line bets. You win if the ball lands on one of those six numbers.

OUTSIDE BETS

  • F - Column Bet (twelve numbers):Placing a chip in one of the boxes marked "2 to 1" at the end of the columns covers all the numbers in that column, a total of twelve. Neither the zero nor the double zero are covered by any of the columns. There are 3 possible Column bets. You win if the ball lands on one of 12 numbers of the column.

  • G - Dozen Bet (twelve numbers):Placing a chip in one of the three boxes marked "1st 12," "2nd 12," or "3rd 12" covers those twelve numbers. There are 3 possible Dozen bets. You win if the ball lands on one of 12 numbers covered.

  • H - Red or Black (eighteen numbers):Place your chip either on the "black" or the "red" field on the outside. This covers all the black or red numbers on the field. The zero and double zero are not covered by any of these boxes. There are 2 possible bets.

  • I - Even or Odd (eighteen numbers):Place your chip either on the "odd" or the "even" field on the outside. Here you bet if the next number that comes up is either even or odd. The zero and double zero are not covered by any of these boxes. There are 2 possible bets.

  • J - Low or High (eighteen numbers):This bet divides the field of numbers into two groups. The numbers from 1 to 18 (low)and from 19 to 36 (high). You bet on whether the next number that comes up is between 1 and 18 or 19 and 36. In either case if 0 or 00 shows up you lose. There are 2 possible bets.

Now that you know about the different types of bets, the interesting thing is how the payout or the winnings calculated for each of the differnet types of bets. The following table would tell you how each of the bets are paid out.

Inside Bet Type Payout or Winnings Example: Bet = $1
Profit =
Straight up 35:1 $35
Split Bet 17:1 $17
Street Bet 11:1 $11
Corner Bet 8:1 $8
Line Bet 5:1 $5
Outside Bet Type Payout or Winnings Example: Bet = $1
Profit =
Column 2:1 $2
Dozen 2:1 $2
Red or Black 1:1 $1
Even or Odd 1:1 $1
Low or High 1:1 $1

Sections of the Wheel

Now we would identify three of the most important sections of the wheel. Why this study is important because of a simple analogy. If I ask you to predict on which number the ball is going to fall then you might be puzzled. However if I slice the wheel in three parts and ask you to guess then you may succeed. If you can recognize the sections of the wheel then you advance yourself from a beginner level to advanced level. Now I will introduce to you three of the most recognized sections of the wheel. They are called The Grand Series, The Orphans and the Tiers. You would find that Grand Series and Tiers are called the most important sections of the wheel. See the following diagram.

Illustration 5 - Sections of the Wheel

THE GRAND SERIES

Grand Series consists of 17 numbers of the wheel. When you are playing section of the wheel, Grand Series is by far the most popular way of playing. Sometimes you will notice that numbers closer to Zero are appearing very frequently. This means that repeatedly Grand Series is coming up. There is way of putting bets on these 17 numbers. Most of the online casinos will have an option of placing bets of Grand Series. So say if you are playing with $1 minimum bet and you want to play Grand Series then you would put your bets as following

Numbers Bet On Type of Bet Amount Bet Winning Profit
0,2,3 Street Bet $2 $22
4,7 Split Bet $1 $17
12,15 Split Bet $1 $17
18,21 Split Bet $1 $17
19,22 Split Bet $1 $17
25,26,28,29 Corner Bet $2 $16
32,35 Split Bet $1 $17
TOTAL BET/WIN $9 $16 or $17 or $22

So in Grand Series you are covering 17 numbers by putting a bet of $9 and you can profit either $16 or $17 or $22 depending on the outcome. Remember this section of the wheel is very important when playing Roulette

THE ORPHANS

The Orphans consists of 8 numbers of the wheel. Orpahn numbers though not repeated frequently but for our system we will study them and to learn how the payouts work for them. Again we assume that we are playing a minimum of $1 bet, follow the following payout table to understand the betting on the orphans

Numbers Bet On Type of Bet Amount Bet Winning Profit
1 Straight Up Bet $1 $35
6,9 Split Bet $1 $17
14,17 Split Bet $1 $17
17,20 Split Bet $1 $17
31,34 Split Bet $1 $17
TOTAL BET/WIN $5 $17 or $35

So in Orphan you are covering 8 numbers by putting a bet of $5 and you can profit either $17 or $35 depending on the outcome.

The TIERS

After Grand Series, Tiers are the most important section of the wheel. In Tiers you are covering 12 numbers of the wheel. This is important for two reasons. If Grand Series is not repeating or not coming up, that means Tier is coming up as orphans has less chances of appearing in a spin. Secondly, the payout of Tiers is highly favourable to players as compared to Grand Series and gives to chance to play tier more often to increase the chances of your win. I am not suggesting here anything at this stage however the payout table would reflect few straight forward things. Follow the table below for Tiers

Numbers Bet On Type of Bet Amount Bet Winning Profit
5,8 Split Bet $1 $17
10,11 Split Bet $1 $17
13,16 Split Bet $1 $17
23,24 Split Bet $1 $17
27,30 Split Bet $1 $17
33,36 Split Bet $1 $17
TOTAL BET/WIN $6 $17

In Tiers as you can see that by putting a bet of $6 in total, you have the chance of winning $17 if Tier comes up. As the initial outlay is small and you are also covering one important section of the wheel you can actually increase you chances by playing Tiers more than any other section of the wheel.
